Building a training app for a pro boxer, with sleep from the Oura ring

We built a native training app for a professional boxer that keeps training, food and sleep in one place. It reads sleep from the Oura ring and data from the phone, so one app can show how the athlete recovered next to what they have to do today. The app is live in the App Store.

Why generic fitness apps fall short

Most fitness apps are built for an average user with an average goal. A fighter's week is built around a specific coach, a specific program and a fight on the calendar.

A custom app can carry that program as it is, in the athlete's own language, with the coach's drills rather than a stock library.

What is in the app

  • Training plans and drills in one place
  • Food alongside training, not in a separate tracker
  • Sleep read from the Oura ring
  • Data from the phone
  • Motivation built into the daily routine

Why wearable data belongs inside the plan

Wearable apps are good at showing a score, and they usually stop there. The score sits in one app and the training plan sits in another, so the athlete has to connect the two in their head.

Putting sleep next to the day's work closes that gap. That is the useful part of a wearable integration: not another chart, but the right number in the place where the decision gets made.

What to plan for with health data

Wearable and health data takes more care than most app features. Ask for access only to what the app uses, explain why in plain language, and treat App Store review of health-related features as part of the schedule.

Questions

Can a custom app read data from an Oura ring?
Yes. This app reads sleep from the Oura ring, with the user's permission.
Is this only for pro athletes?
No. The same approach fits a coach, gym or training brand that wants its own program in its own app instead of a generic fitness product.
