What a barbershop chain gets from its own booking app
A barbershop chain's own booking app shows clients the next free chair, lets them keep their barber, and takes payment before they sit down. We built one that is live in the App Store. The client's name is under NDA, but the demo below is the real interface rebuilt with sample data.
When a chain outgrows a booking marketplace
Booking marketplaces are a good way to start. They come with a schedule, reminders and a shop page on day one.
The trade-off is that the client relationship sits inside someone else's app, next to other shops. A chain with its own brand and regular clients often wants that relationship back: its own icon on the phone, its own notifications and its own client list.
What the app needs to do
- Show the next free chair across every location
- Let regulars book their own barber in a couple of taps
- Take payment in the app, before the client sits down
- Give each barber a profile with photos of real work
- Keep schedules for every barber at every location in one system
Designing for a thirty-second visit
Nobody wants to spend time in a barbershop app. A regular opens it, books the usual and leaves. So the most common path should be the shortest one, and everything else should stay out of the way.
It also has to look like the shop. A chain's brand lives in the room, and the app is the part of that room clients carry around. The demo here shows a dark look built for one chain, and a different shop would get a different one.
Should you build one?
If you run one shop and your current tool works, keep it. A custom app starts to pay off when you run several locations, your regulars book often, and you want to own the relationship with them.
Questions
- Can clients book the same barber at any location?
- That is a design decision for each chain. With your own app you set the rule, whether a barber works one shop or moves between several.
- Who owns the client list?
- You do. With a custom build the code, the data and the App Store account are all in your name.
